Woodside School where learning is an adventure. Recognized by Ofsted as a school where children achieve “outstanding personal outcomes”. At Woodside School we are ambitious for our children academically but take equal care to develop their all round abilities and personal confidence through a rich and exciting curriculum and a wide range of sporting and creative activities. In fact we believe Woodside children are more successful academically because of all the other activities they do.

Speak Up, Speak Out
Younger school council members planted a birch tree to mark Holocaust Memorial Day (27th January). This is the day the allies liberated concentration camps in WWII but the theme this year is “Speak Up, Speak Out” against hatred and discrimination today. The school council will be following this up with a special assembly on Monday.
Mo Mo Theatre
Y5 & 6 enjoyed a highly entertaining presentation from Mo Mo Theatre on cutting pollution by car sharing, cycling and walking more. Could you car share with another parent or take turns to pick up each others’ children?
One Way System
We would like to encourage everyone to observe an unofficial one way system when dropping off and collecting children. Please come down Grangewood Avenue towards the school and then along Carlton Road. This should ease some of the congestion.
Big Bird Watch
Woodside Wild Life Club took part in the RSPB’s Big Bird Watch this week and you can do the same at home this weekend. Just record the birds you see in your garden (or a park) in one hour and upload your findings onto the RSPB website.
Reading Race
We are running a new competition for the class who read the most. The prize will be an inflatable assault course and Class 5T are in the lead after the first week. Make sure you sign your child’s reading record every time they read.
Woodside Cafe
We have opened our dining hall as an after school cafe for parents who are waiting while their children attend clubs or just fancy a cup of tea and a chat with other parents. If there is demand the cafe will run Monday to Thursday through the winter and will sell refreshments outside in the summer.
Woodside Academy?
Our governors are now looking seriously into academy status for Woodside School and are seeking your views. You can find information about what being an academy means here.
Sports
The boys’ football matches were cancelled this week but the High Five team won 9:1 when they played Tilbury Manor and girls’ A team won 6:0 against Arthur Bugler Juniors!
Police Warning
Police are now making unscheduled visits to the school and we are supplying photographs of cars when they are not here. They have already issued a number of tickets.
Graduate Teacher Applications
The deadline for Graduate Teacher Programme applications for 2012-13 has now passed and we have made our selection. We will be open for 2013-14 applications in the autumn term.
Holidays
Taking holidays in term time should be avoided if at all possible at it tells your child you think school is not important. If you really need to book a school time holiday remember to request authorization before finalizing the booking as not all requests are agreed.
